Elementary Teacher
Marie McCumber is an elementary teacher at the Ohio State School for the Blind, currently teaching the 5th grade. Previously she worked as a multiple disabilities and low-incidence teacher, serving students from preschool through the 7th grade, working in both public and private school environments.

She graduated from Ashland University in 2006 with her Bachelors of Science in Early Childhood Intervention. In 2018, she completed the licensure program at The Ohio State University for Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments. She is currently attending Baldwin Wallace University to obtain a Master of Arts degree in Leadership in Technology.

Marie has presented numerous times about the importance of teaching STEM skills to students with disabilities, how to write effective progress reports, and on caseload ratios in special education. She has published one children’s book entitled My Name Is Not Jamie.

She lives in Columbus, Ohio with her two children, her partner, and her two step-children. They keep her running in their collective involvement in fencing, gymnastics, hockey, and baseball. She strives to make connections in the classroom and bring in as much fun as she can.

She is the 2012 recipient of the State Support Team Region 7 Outstanding Educator Award and a 2022 nominee for Ohio Teacher of the Year.

She believes in the capability, competence, and potential of all students.
